Safety and Access Protocols

EMiL prioritizes the safety and security of all users within its facility. Access to the EMiL facility is regulated to ensure security measures are upheld.

Safety Protocols

At EMiL, safety is paramount. Rigorous training is provided to all users, ensuring they are equipped with essential safety procedures. UNLV users undergo comprehensive safety training, including online radiation safety and general lab chemical hygiene courses. External users receive detailed briefings on radiation risks and proper handling of hazardous materials.

The lab enforces a strict dress code, requiring users to wear long pants and closed-toe shoes, and prohibits food and drinks to maintain a hazard-free environment. X-ray emission risks associated with electron microscopy are confined within the instruments themselves, and all three instruments at EMiL are certified X-ray safe by the State of Nevada.

The UNLV safety officers and the lab manager regularly review associated risks and develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for user compliance. Inspections, including radiation assessments and lab inspections, are conducted regularly to ensure safety standards are upheld.

Best Practices

EMiL follows best practices in facility management, emphasizing stringent safety protocols, efficient instrument maintenance, and a clean working environment. All users strictly adhere to UNLV’s safety protocols, including online radiation certification and in-person chemical hygiene training. External users receive comprehensive briefings on radiation risks and lab hygiene best practices from the lab manager.
